Do You Carry Jumper Cables in Your Vehicle?

Good Samaritans are always ready to help other drivers in difficult situations. If you carry jumper cables in your vehicle, you will want to know how to use them correctly just in case you are asked for help getting someone else's vehicle started someday.

  1. You can typically identify the positive and negative end clamps on jumper cables by the color of the clamps. Red indicates positive and black generally indicates the negative end.
  2. The same if often true with the negative and positive battery posts, but not always. Sometimes, it is the large post that indicates it is positive.
  3. Hook the positive and negative clamps of the jumper cable to the corresponding posts on the dead battery.
  4. Hook the positive and then the negative clamps to the corresponding battery posts of the other vehicle.
  5. Start the vehicle with the charged battery and allow it to run a few minutes.
  6. Turn the ignition on the vehicle with the dead battery to see if it starts.
